Message from Professor Roger Woods, Executive Dean, Faculty of Education, Law and Social Sciences, Birmingham City University

Thank you for expressing an interest in the roles of Associate Deans in the Faculty of Education, Law and Social Sciences at Birmingham City University. These are key appointments for us, and will be critical to our future success and the achievement of our strategic goals. Faculty management structures at Birmingham City University are common across the six faculties. Each Faculty is led by an Executive Dean who is supported by a team of three Associate Deans. These posts are advertised following the retirements of two colleagues over the last academic year.

There couldn’t be a more exciting time to join Birmingham City University. In response to a new ambitious corporate plan, we have seen sustained excellence in many academic areas, the quality and number of our applications increase, strong financial performance and a range of exciting estates developments. However, the external environment that we now face is more challenging and competitive than higher education has ever been faced with in the past and the University needs to position itself to respond positively to this new, fast-moving landscape.

Building on our heritage and enviable reputation for the excellence of our teaching, particularly in areas of creative and professional practice and collaboration with business, commerce and industry , Birmingham City University has embarked upon an ambitious development to continue to respond to the Teaching, Research and Employer Engagement challenges that lie ahead and the ever more sophisticated demands of our partners, stakeholders and users.

The Faculty of Education, Law and Social Sciences sits at the heart of our the University’s strategy. With an international reputation for its Education and Teacher Training division, along with exemplary performance and strong teaching, research and consultancy across the board, the faculty continues to strengthen partnerships with both local and wider communities, particularly through our work with schools, children's agencies, the criminal justice, governmental, legal and housing professions.

Associate Deans have generic roles and work in a collegial manner, sharing responsibilities in supporting the Executive Dean but each Associate Dean has his or her personal portfolio of responsibilities. We have indicated these in the job descriptions but there can be some flexibility over these by mutual agreement amongst the team.

There is another exciting prospect for the Faculty. I will retire on September 30th from my post as Executive Dean. I will be succeeded by Professor Fiona Church. Two of our four Heads of Schools will also be retiring at the end of the academic year so the senior management group of the Faculty will be changing, offering new colleagues the chance to shape the future of the Faculty in a most significant manner. The School of Social Sciences will be temporarily led by the current Deputy Head of School. The School of Primary and Early Years Education and the School of Secondary and Post Compulsory Education will provisionally merge under the leadership of the current Head of the latter school.

We are keen to find colleagues who  share our passion and commitment, and who will help lead the Faculty through the next exciting part of its journey. If you are excited by this opportunity, we look forward to hearing from you.

I hope you find the information presented on this website of interest. Please contact our advising consultants, Veredus, to discuss the roles in more detail. Alternatively, I will be happy to respond directly to any specific questions.

Yours sincerely

Professor Roger Woods
